HISTORY of
CRAWFORD'S AMERICAN JUJITSU & MMA

Crawford's American MMA Jujitsu started in 1996, when Steven A. Crawford received his fifth black belt (Jujitsu, Kenpo, Combat Grappling, Kickboxing and Judo). Only then did he feel he had enough experience in the Martial Arts to run his own school.  Mr. Crawford started with Shorinji Ryu Jujitsu under Kenneth L. Penland and is now a Fifth Dan in Jujitsu and Judo. Mr. Crawford knew this would cover the Takedowns, Throws, Locks and Holds.

Mr. Crawford felt his system needed stand up, the next style he liked was Kenpo.  While traveling to California to train with Mr. Penland in 1993, he visited the Ed Parker Kenpo Karate school, renewing his interest in Kenpo that he had started training in as a teenager.  After reading an ad in Black Belt Magazine for Kenpo lessons he started training with Chuck Sullivan and Vic LeRoux and in 1996 received his Black Belt.  Mr. Crawford became so involved with the IKCA Kenpo that he helped in the development of the training dummy that the IKCA now sells on their web site. Mr. Crawford knew that adding Kenpo would enhance Hand Speed and the Self Defense portion of the system.

Mr. Crawford then added a Leg section through his friendship with a co-worker, We will call Mr. X, in 1996. While in the military, Mr. X was a sparring partner for Joe Lewis, a renown Kickboxer.  Mr. Crawford and Mr. X started training together to help each other make their systems better. In 2000, Mr Crawford received his Second Dan, in
American Kickboxing Karate.

Mr. Crawford opened his first school in his basement.
He then met Frank Stuckey, owner of Moffett's Gym.
Frank allowed Mr. Crawford to sub-lease space to open a school.
This is where he would meet his most loyal student, Mr. Brad Jones.
Mr. Jones was a boxer and MMA fighter.
Mr. Crawford started training Brad for a fight against Bobby Hoffman.
Mr. Crawford and Mr. Jones were so impressed with each others abilities that they started a competition team.  This allowed Mr. Crawford to see the importance of developing a MMA training facility and inspired him to develop American Jujitsu.

American Jujitsu a proven competition team in the Kansas City area.
Mr. Crawford has put fighters in the most well known fight shows there are.
UFC (30), UFC (48),  Extreme Challenge (16), Hook-n-Shoot, Danger Zone,
King of the Cage, Gladiators along with other area events.  In addition to these well known events held in the United States, AJJ fighters have competed in Russia and Greece.
